Thanks to the past support of our many friends, Oakland is continuing to serve as a focal point for learning about the county's rural heritage. Hundreds of people from near and far have attended our programs on old surveying techniques, maps and "lost communities," country stores, the importance of oral history, the aftermath of Hurricane Camille, and many more topics.
Please note that Oakland does not receive membership dues. Moreover, receipts from admissions do not cover the costs of maintaining the Oakland buildings and property. In recent months, we have had to undertake long-needed maintenance and improvements to the Oakand bulding--painting of roof, replacement of the museum shop roof and porch roof, replacement of waste pipe from house to septic, and work on the drainage system around the foundation. The total cost for this work is considerable!
